Invisalign Q & A

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a teeth-straightening system that consists of customized clear aligners that incrementally reposition your teeth. Many patients both adolescent and adult, love Invisalign because the plastic aligners are wafer-thin, completely transparent, and perfectly molded to the teeth. This means that nearly invisible teeth straightening is truly possible!

What kind of problems does Invisalign treat?

Invisalign corrects the same types of issues as old-fashioned braces, but without all the metal. This includes:

  • Crowded mouth: teeth overlapping due to lack of space in your mouth
  • Gaps: spaces between your teeth due to poor alignment or missing teeth
  • Overbite: the top teeth arch partly or totally overlaps the bottom arch
  • Underbite: the lower teeth arch partly or completely overlap the top arch
  • Crossbite: one or more upper arch teeth fall inside the lower teeth when biting down

Bite problems like the ones above can eventually cause jaw pain, bone loss, gum disease, or temporomandibular joint disorders, so it’s best to correct such issues now instead of later.

How does Invisalign treatment work?

Your Allen and Schwarz dentist begins by taking 3D digital X-ray images of your whole jaw. They’ll evaluate your jaw from various angles and then plot a treatment course using the Invisalign digital mapping system. You’ll even get to see a projection of your future smile.

Your dentist transmits the treatment plan and the X-rays to the Invisalign labs, where your new aligners are manufactured. Once the aligners are ready, you’ll return to Allen and Schwarz Dental to pick them up. At that time, your dentist checks to make sure your aligners fit well and reviews the treatment plan with you.

You’ll wear the braces 20-22 hours a day, removing them only for eating and oral hygiene. Every 1-2 weeks, you change to a new set of aligners until you’re completely finished with treatment. You’ll typically see the dentist around every 4-6 weeks for a quick progress check until your treatment is complete.

How long will I wear Invisalign?

Treatment time depends on the individual and the specific bite problem. On average, most patients wear Invisalign for 12-18 months — often, much shorter than the average two years that many patients wear braces.

If you need to overcome an overbite, get out from under an underbite, or get straighter teeth overall, Allen and Schwarz Dental can help you get started with Invisalign. Book online or by phone today.
